Drs. Stephen S. Gao & Kelly H. Liu (Geophysics) Geophysics plays a vital role in the exploration and characterization of underground resources including oil, gas, gas hydrates, and geo-thermal energy. One of the research focuses of Missouri S&T’s geophysics group, which consists of two faculty members (Drs. Liu and Gao) and a number of MS and PhD graduate students, is to conduct research projects in energy exploration using a variety of geophysical methods, such as seismic reflection, seismic refraction, and gravity and magnetic methods. More specifically, we are interested in improving computational techniques for the processing and enhancement of digital seismic signals, interpretation of 3-D and 4-D seismic reflection data, seismic attributes, mechanical earth modeling, seismic while drilling, seismic wave attenuation, and seismic anisotropy associated with fractures and fluids in the upper crust.

Keywords: geophysics, earthquakes, subsurface exploration, seismic monitoring of hydrofracturing
